Energy Infrastructure

Between the generating station and the end user sits a wide, varied class of assets: interconnections, storage, rail traction supplies, district networks, industrial distribution and the rapidly growing population of grid support equipment. We supply transformer solutions for energy infrastructure developers and their contractors, where each asset class brings its own rules.

Our customers across this sector include infrastructure developers, EPC contractors, electrical engineering companies, industrial groups, transport authorities and utility companies.

The common thread is that these projects are usually part of something bigger. A transformer that arrives late or is dimensionally wrong delays an entire programme, which is why our focus here is interface information: drawings, dimensions, terminal details and test data delivered early enough for other trades to work around.

Battery Energy Storage

Storage projects create the most interesting new transformer duty in the sector. Power flows both ways, sometimes switching direction several times an hour, which makes the loading and thermal cycling far more aggressive than an equivalent-sized steady load.

Points that need settling at the specification stage: bidirectional tap changer suitability, cyclic thermal rating rather than steady-state rating, whether your grid code requires specific reactive capability at the terminals, and how the transformer is protected when the converter is the only source during islanded operation.

Grid Interconnection and Reinforcement

Interconnecting transformers link networks operating at different voltages, or join operators with different practices — which usually means the specification has to satisfy two sets of requirements. Phase shift is often introduced deliberately, as in phase-shifting transformers used to control power flow.

Reinforcement projects have a different constraint: the new unit must usually fit an existing site. Foundation dimensions, busbar connection details and clearance to existing structures often limit the design more tightly than anything electrical. We build in oil-drained or split-body options where transport routes or site access demand it.

Industrial Energy Infrastructure

Steel, cement, chemicals, data centres, mining and water treatment are all transformer-intensive. Their duties share two features: the load is large and often unbalanced, and harmonics come with it — from arc furnaces, large drives, or rectifiers.

Harmonic loading has to be stated in the enquiry, either as a spectrum or a K-factor, so that windings are designed for the real eddy-current loss. Leave it out and either the unit runs hot, or an over-conservative derating costs you capacity. See our industrial project applications page for industrial-specific guidance.

Transportation Electrification

Rail traction supply is a specialist corner of this sector: single-phase loads that unbalance the three-phase network, regenerative braking that reverses power direction, and catenary voltage systems that vary between countries.

Traction transformers are usually specified to railway authority standards rather than general IEC clauses. We build to specification where the requirement falls within our scope, and will confirm that at review stage.

Our Solutions

Equipment is drawn from our power transformer, oil-immersed, dry-type, high voltage, renewable energy, compact substation and switchgear and control ranges — supplied as individual units or coordinated as packages.

Compact and prefabricated substations are used widely across this sector because much of this infrastructure is in constrained, remote or fast-moving environments. Our compact units arrive factory tested, which means weeks less site work.

Project Delivery and Interface Management

Infrastructure projects rarely fail on transformer performance. They fail on interfaces — the civil dimensions that were never confirmed, the busbar connection that did not match, the test report that arrived after commissioning was scheduled.

We issue the interface data early: outline drawings showing transport dimensions and weights, foundation loading including dynamic loads, terminal positions and drilling details, tap changer and marshalling box schemes, and auxiliary supply requirements. That information is what lets civil design proceed while the transformer is still being built.

Two further points consistently reduce project risk. First, agreeing the factory acceptance test programme at order stage, so witnessed testing slots are booked rather than negotiated later. Second, confirming transport route limitations before design freeze, because restrictions discovered afterwards are expensive to engineer around.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you build for battery storage projects? Yes. Provide the charge and discharge profile with your enquiry so that cyclic loading is designed for rather than assumed.

Can you fit replacement units to existing foundations? Often yes, though existing clearances and busbar positions constrain the design. Send site photographs and drawings.

Do you handle harmonic-heavy industrial loads? Yes — specify the harmonic spectrum or K-factor and we will design the windings accordingly.

Can you supply packages as well as individual transformers? Yes. As a substation power solution provider we coordinate the complete package against a single programme.
