Power Transformer Cooling Methods: ONAN, ONAF, OFAF Complete Guide

Power Transformer Cooling Methods Explained

Power transformer cooling methods are critical for maintaining optimal operating temperature and ensuring long-term reliability. Different cooling methods are used based on transformer size, power rating, and application requirements.

ONAN Cooling (Oil Natural Air Natural)

ONAN is the most basic cooling method for oil immersed power transformers. Heat is dissipated through natural convection of oil inside the transformer and natural air flow over the cooling fins.

Key Characteristics:

  • Simplest and most reliable cooling method
  • No fans or pumps required
  • Low maintenance
  • Suitable for small to medium power transformers (up to ~30MVA)
  • Typical noise level: 55-65 dB

ONAF Cooling (Oil Natural Air Forced)

ONAF adds forced air cooling using fans mounted on the radiator. This increases the cooling capacity by 30-50% compared to ONAN.

Key Characteristics:

  • Forced air fans on radiators
  • Increased cooling capacity (30-50% higher than ONAN)
  • Fan control based on oil temperature
  • Suitable for medium to large power transformers (30-100MVA)
  • Automatic fan start/stop

OFAF Cooling (Oil Forced Air Forced)

OFAF uses both oil pumps and forced air fans. The oil is pumped through the cooler for more efficient heat dissipation.

Key Characteristics:

  • Oil pumps + forced air fans
  • Highest cooling efficiency
  • Suitable for large power transformers (100MVA+)
  • EHV and UHV transformers
  • Compact size for high power ratings

Choosing the Right Cooling Method

The choice of cooling method depends on several factors:

  1. Power Rating: Small transformers use ONAN, large transformers use OFAF
  2. Application: Power plants may require ONAF/OFAF for overload capability
  3. Space Constraints: OFAF allows more compact design
  4. Cost: ONAN is the most economical
  5. Maintenance: ONAN requires the least maintenance
